| Dear Business Owner:
Did you know that Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs). Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Report. Reported in Houston Chronicle, January, 1988. And that One study shows that when a child learns music, a portion of their brain actually grows! The younger the musical training begins, the larger the area. (Nature, April 23, 1998). There is an abundance of research and so very many articles that are easily accessed on the internet in regard to this subject. The universities have been researching the benefits of music education for many years now. Their findings in the last 20 years can not be ignored. It is our belief, based on research and many years of music teaching, that learning to read music and play an instrument improves reading and math ability, physical coordination and eye functions. It improves on the thought-process, logical thinking skills, and organization and memory skills. If taught correctly it will also bolster self-esteem. In the case of group learning it improves social skills and the ability to achieve a goal as a group through individual efforts. Learning to play an instrument and read music can be achieved at any age and the benefits are enormous. Our Goal at Music Makers…for Life, is to not only teach students (of all ages) to read and play music, but to apply what they are learning in public performance experiences. We’ve helped kids gain confidence on top of the skills they are learning. For some kids, their love for music is the only thing that keeps them going. I’m certain you know someone or of someone who has attempted suicide or started to follow a crowd of kids into drugs, sex, cutting or starvation. We have parents that have brought their kids for lessons and to join the groups because they are afraid for their children and they know that music is the only passion of the child. Parents know that at Music Makers we focus on giving the students and groups a safe, friendly, and educational forum where they can feel they belong to a group playing the music and instrument that they love. I remember an in-service when I was music teacher over 20 years ago in District 89 (Maywood). There was a serious gang problem and the presenter was a Chicago Police Officer who specialized in Gang activity. One thing he said stuck with me in my years of teaching, as well as in raising my own two children: The reason kids join gangs or follow the wrong crowd is the human need to belong to a group. Because of this, I’ve focused much of my music teaching life to get as many kids as possible to join my choirs, plays, bands, and ensembles. In order to do this they also need the musical skills to be able to contribute to those groups to the best of their ability. Music Makers has now been in business for 5 years. We start kids as young as age 2 and up and offer classes as well as private lessons for all instruments (including voice). We don’t charge for the extra time our teachers give or for the equipment and other costs. Times are tough enough, and many of our parents are struggling just to pay for lessons that they feel is a need for their kids. We put on at least 8 big shows a year, and many smaller ones. There is a way you can help, and at the same time spread the word about your business! Between September, 2011 and September, 2012 your ad will reach approximately 4,000 people.
